General Microbiology

ASI provides a wide range of testing and consulting services to address issues regarding the microbiological quality of water, wastewater, sediments, soil, etc.  Representative projects have included samples of biofilms/fouling, distribution system positive coliform samples / regrowth, reclaimed water, microbial induced corrosion (MIC), cutting fluids, vegetable and fruit wash water, more.

ASI’s capabilities include bacterial plates counts (aerobic and anaerobic), fungal plate counts, bacteriophages, nuisance organisms such as iron bacteria, sulfate reducing bacteria, etc., coupled with microbial identification and genetic sequencing to address your project needs regarding indicators and/or specific pathogens.

Aerobic Spore Studies – Aerobic spores commonly occur in sufficient concentrations in surface waters to allow their use as a measure of filtration efficiency.  ASI has participated in projects to assess performance of pilot, full scale and natural filtration systems.  For example, in one study, samples were collected from a river site and four adjacent wells weekly for one year to assess the effectiveness of riverbank filtration throughout the year, and determine the need for additional treatment.

Microbially Induced Corrosion (MIC) - ASI routinely supports investigations of MIC in Fire Protection Systems (FPS) and other premise plumbing, providing microbiological analysis for sulfate reducing bacteria, acid producing bacteria, nitrate reducing bacteria, iron bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, etc.  In addition, ASI has worked in conjunction with other expert laboratories to provide metallurgical analyses and corrosion control guidance.  Our team can help you meet NFPA 13 and 25 and other requirements / best management practices.
