LT2 Schedule 4 Public Water Suppliers - Source Water Monitoring
The purpose of the LT2 rule is to reduce illness associated with Cryptosporidium and other disease-causing microorganisms in drinking water. The rule will further existing regulations by requiring systems with higher concentrations of Cryptosporidium in their source waters to provide additional treatment. LT2 requirements and schedule vary according to system size.
LT2 requires Public Water Systems (PWS) serving less than 10,000 people (Schedule 4 PWSs) using surface water sources to monitor their source(s) for E. coli every other week for 12 months.
The E. coli results will be used to determine whether additional source water monitoring for Cryptosporidium is required. Schedule 4 PWSs may also elect to go directly to Cryptosporidium monitoring (starting in January 2010) instead of performing initial E. coli monitoring.
Deadline #1: July 1, 2008
Schedule 4 PWSs must submit:
- Sampling schedule that specifies date of sample collection and location of sampling
- Notice of intent to submit data for grandfathering (if applicable)
- Notice of intent to conduct Cryptosporidium monitoring rather than E. coli (if applicable)
- Notice of intent to provide maximum treatment requirements under LT2 (if applicable).
Deadline #2: October, 2008
- Schedule 4 filtered systems must begin E. coli monitoring
- Source water samples are collected and submitted bi-weekly (every other week).
Laboratory Certification
- ASI is an EPA-approved laboratory for Cryptosporidium and E. coli enumeration under the LT2 Laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
- ASI currently analyzes more than 400 Cryptosporidium samples per month.
- ASI is staffed and equipped to provide sampling supplies and instructions to clients, and to receive, analyze and report Schedule 4 E. coli samples.
- ASI is authorized to enter data in the EPA’s Data Collection & Tracking System (DCTS) for both Cryptosporidium and E. coli.
- ASI is certified under NELAP by the Florida Dept. of Health for analysis of Drinking Water and Non-Potable water for Total Coliforms and E. coli, by Colilert™ (SM 9223B). ASI is also certified by Vermont, Connecticut, and New Mexico.
- NOTE: There are specific certification requirements for LT2 E. coli laboratories – and most laboratories that perform coliform testing do not have the required certification.
Sample Shipment
- For LT2 compliance, E. coli samples must arrive at the laboratory at ≤10°C (and unfrozen).
- ASI has customized shipping containers and instructions to reduce shipping costs while meeting sample temperature requirements. We have tested shipping containers and packing materials under extreme temperature conditions to ensure temperature integrity.
